The Baking Business Reset.
A practical guide for home bakers who want a clearer menu, better pricing and a business that is easier to run.
You can be good at baking and still find the business side difficult.
Perhaps you are getting orders, but your menu keeps growing. You are not fully sure what each cake costs to make. Customers ask for changes you have not priced for. You spend hours baking, replying to messages, shopping, packing and delivering, then wonder where the money has gone.
The Baking Business Reset is a practical, self-paced guide to the decisions behind a well-run baking business.
It will help you look at what you sell, what it costs, how you make it, how you present it and how you make ordering easier for customers. The aim is not to fill your menu, take every request or spend all day online. It is to build a way of working that you can repeat properly.
Who this is for
The Baking Business Reset is for home bakers and small baking businesses who want to get more organised around the work they are already doing.
It will be particularly useful if you are:
Unsure whether your prices cover the full cost of each order
Offering too many products, flavours, sizes or custom options
Spending more time than you expected on shopping, preparation, customer messages and packaging
Finding it hard to explain what you sell and who it is for
Posting regularly but unsure what helps customers decide to order
Preparing for a seasonal collection and want to make it manageable
You do not need a large following, a studio kitchen or a finished brand to use it. You need an honest view of what is working, what is taking too much time and what needs simplifying.
What is inside
The guide is organised around six parts, so you can work through the decisions in a sensible order.
1. Your menu
How to look at what you currently sell and decide which products deserve a place on your menu.
You will consider what you make well, what customers return for, what is practical to produce and what takes more time or money than it brings back.
2. Costing and margin
How to look beyond ingredient cost and account for the full work involved in a finished product.
This includes ingredients, labour, packaging, wastage, energy, payment fees and the everyday costs that need to be covered for the business to make sense.
3. Production and workflow
How to make baking days more repeatable.
You will look at portions, batch sizes, ingredient choices, preparation, cooling, decorating and packing so that the same product does not become a different job every time you make it.
4. Packaging and presentation
How to choose packaging that protects your cakes, suits the product, works within the price and feels considered when a customer receives it.
5. Marketing and ordering
How to show your products in a way that helps the right people understand what they are buying.
This includes what to photograph, what information customers need before they order, how to use your content during a selling period and how to make ordering more straightforward.
6. A paced plan
A clear four-part plan to help you work through the guide without trying to change everything in one weekend.
If you are fitting the business around a job, children, family or other responsibilities, take the time you need. The point is to make useful decisions and put them into practice properly.
What it helps you do
By the end, you will have
A clearer view of the products that belong on your menu
A practical way to cost products before setting a price
A better understanding of where time, ingredients and packaging are being lost
A simpler approach to production and order preparation
Clearer customer information around what you offer and how people order
A stronger starting point for seasonal collections and future planning
The guide does not provide a shortcut to instant orders, a guaranteed income or a one-size-fits-all cake price. Every business has different ingredients, local costs, working hours, equipment and customers.
It gives you a process for making decisions from your own figures and your own capacity.
Why I wrote it
I know how quickly a baking business can become more complicated than it first appears.
The baking is only one part. There is the costing, shopping, preparation, customer messages, collection arrangements, packaging, photographs, marketing and the constant pressure to say yes to another request.
I am Le Cordon Bleu trained and have worked in pastry for more than two decades. I have run a home baking business in London and later Sweet Elements Patisserie in Chester. I also spent a decade in senior brand marketing.
This guide brings those two sides together: the practical reality of making and selling cakes, and the decisions that help a small business feel clearer and more manageable.
